Interoperability on Algorand: Cross-Chain & Multichain Bridges

Interoperability on Algorand

Connecting Algorand to the multichain ecosystem with cross-chain bridges, messaging, and state proofs.

Algorand connects to the multichain ecosystem through trusted third-party bridges and cross-chain messaging protocols.

Core protocol features

State Proofs and blockchain interoperability primitives

Builders leverage State Proofs to verify Algorand state externally. Combined with ASAs and Atomic Transfers, these tools form the foundation for secure cross-chain applications.

Interoperability on Algorand: Two paths to build

Algorand supports interoperability through trusted third-party providers and its own cryptographic primitives. This dual approach offers flexibility for developers while maintaining security and performance.

1. Third-party providers

Our partners are mature, cross-chain solutions integrated into Algorand to move assets and data across ecosystems.

Wormhole

Wormhole enables native token transfers between Algorand and over 20 other chains, including Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche. It operates as a generalized messaging protocol, making it possible to pass arbitrary data and tokens securely across ecosystems.

Key benefits:

Read the Wormhole integration announcement.

Allbridge

Allbridge provides cross-chain infrastructure connecting EVM and non-EVM ecosystems. With Allbridge, Algorand users and developers will gain access to an even wider liquidity network.

Key benefits:

Read the Allbridge launch announcement.

2. Algorand’s internal solutions

While not full bridges themselves, Algorand’s internal solutions provide the foundation for secure and efficient cross-chain activity.

State Proofs

State Proofs let other chains verify Algorand’s state without relying on intermediaries.

Key benefits:

Read the State Proofs overview.

Account abstraction (Abstracted accounts)

Algorand supports flexible account models through features like rekeying and logic accounts, enabling accounts to be controlled by programmable logic instead of a single private key.

Key benefits:

Learn more about account abstraction and how it powers xChain Accounts, enabling EVM wallets like MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet to seamlessly access Algorand dApps.

Algorand Standard Assets (ASA)

ASA is Algorand’s unified token standard with low costs and native protocol security.

Read the Smart ASA (ARC-0020) documentation.

Atomic transfers

Atomic transfers enable secure, instant swaps of multiple assets and parties in a single transaction.

Read the atomic transfers documentation.

Secure by design

Security is paramount in cross-chain activity. Algorand only supports integrations with audited and tested interoperability providers. By combining protocol-level security (e.g., State Proofs) with responsible partnerships, the network ensures that users can interact across chains with confidence.

Key principles:

Interoperability in action

By removing the silos between networks, Algorand enables value flow across the multichain landscape.

Institutional Transfers

Enable secure, low-latency movement of assets across blockchain networks for enterprise and institutional use cases, including payments, treasury operations, and settlement.

DeFi Liquidity

Move stablecoins and native assets between Algorand and other major ecosystems to unlock cross-chain liquidity, arbitrage opportunities, and composable DeFi applications.

Cross-Chain Governance

Enable governance participation and token utility across multiple protocols and ecosystems, supporting interoperable DAOs and cross-chain coordination.

NFTs and Gaming

Extend digital assets, in-game items, and NFTs beyond a single chain, allowing creators and developers to reach users across multiple ecosystems.

FAQ

Interoperability on Algorand

No. Algorand does not provide a native, protocol-level bridge. Interoperability on Algorand is enabled through trusted third-party providers and protocol primitives (see above).

Algorand connects to the multichain world through trusted third-party bridges and messaging protocols. Rather than managing complex bridge security in-house, we partner with specialized experts. This allows our team to focus exclusively on what we do best: maintaining a world-class, high-performance layer-1 protocol.

Security depends on the interoperability provider used. Algorand supports integrations with audited and tested partners and complements them with protocol-level security features such as State Proofs and Atomic Transfers. Developers should always review the security model and audits of the bridge they integrate.

State Proofs are lightweight cryptographic proofs that allow external chains to verify Algorand’s state without relying on intermediaries. See our State Proofs developer documents for more information.

Yes. Developers can build cross-chain applications using third-party interoperability providers and leveraging Algorand primitives such as ASAs, Atomic Transfers, and State Proofs.

Interoperability does not affect Algorand’s core properties, including fast finality, low fees, and scalability. However, the end-to-end time to transfer tokens across chains can be influenced by external factors, such as the source chain’s confirmation speed, the time required for VAA signing, and the execution of the transaction on the destination chain..

Algorand continues to explore interoperability primitives and standards, including enhancements to State Proofs.

On Algorand, there are multiple paths to go cross-chain. For example, to take your token natively cross-chain, you should use NTT. If the goal is to improve accessibility for your DApp, you can integrate the Allbridge API.

Regular Wormhole is the interoperability solution, and Wormhole NTT is their new token standard that enables taking your digital asset cross-chain.

xPortal is Folks Finance’s bridging solution, built using Wormhole Portals API. See Get Started with the TypeScript SDK for more details.

Yes. You can build your own bridging flow for an Algorand Standard Asset (ASA). If you are using Wormhole, the typical approach is to deploy the required token and messaging contracts on both the source and destination chains, and then integrate via Wormhole tooling. In the Algorand ecosystem, many teams do this using the Folks Finance NTT SDK (built on Wormhole’s NTT framework) to set up the cross-chain token deployment and wire up transfers.

Listing your ASA on xPortal is optional and does not block you from building your own bridging solution later.
